Advantages and Uses of Side-Opening Containers

As an international intermodal transportation and logistics tool, containers are increasingly being used in a wide range of fields and industries. For the transportation of some special goods, there is now a side-opening container, with the door installed on the side of the container. In certain situations, a container that opens from the side is more practical than one with doors at both ends. The side-opening container is designed to meet this demand.

What is a side-opening container?

Since their invention, sea containers have undergone numerous modifications and innovations. These modifications aim to increase the types of goods that containers can transport and to enhance their functionality in logistics and other applications. One ingenious modification is the addition of side-opening doors.

Side-opening containers are very similar to standard containers. They share the same features, with the only difference being that they also open from the side.

Side-opening containers are also available as high cube containers, which are one foot taller than standard sea containers. For example, their internal height is 9 feet 6 inches instead of 8 feet 6 inches. If you need to load or store particularly tall items, the additional space can be very convenient.

Advantages of side-opening containers

Ease of loading and unloading

This is especially true when using forklifts or pallet jacks. Forklifts or trucks can drive in to place and stack goods without much effort.

Access for oversized items

Side-opening sea containers have larger doors, providing ample space for oversized items that cannot pass through standard containers.

Better access to stored items

With standard containers, items are loaded from back to front, requiring you to move items at the front to access those loaded earlier. Using side-opening containers, items loaded first don't have to come out last, making retrieval quick and efficient.

Better utilization of containers

The side doors also help increase the utilization of sea containers because the container can be divided into two or more sections, serving as multiple cafes, shops, or offices.

Uses of side-opening containers

Due to their versatility, side-opening sea containers can be used for a variety of purposes, including:

Storage

Side-opening containers are the perfect choice for on-site storage because they provide a larger opening for storing large items, making organization, storage, and retrieval of items a quick and easy task. This, combined with the sturdy and secure construction of sea containers, makes them an ideal storage facility.

Transportation

With all the features of standard containers and the added benefit of side-opening doors, side-opening sea containers are ideal for transporting both standard and oversized goods. The side doors offer better options for loading and unloading.

These containers are also ideal for conversion. Some popular conversions include turning them into homes, sheds, offices, cafes, pop-up shops, etc. For conversions where sturdiness is not a priority, more aesthetically pleasing doors such as sliding glass doors or even roll-up doors can be used.
